Do I need roof bars?

Go Overland roof tents are designed to be installed on vehicles equipped with compatible crossbars, whether city cars, vans, SUVs, utility vehicles, pickups, station wagons, etc.

An essential part of your setup, roof bars will allow you to securely attach your roof tent to your car. Let's take a look at the key factors to consider when choosing them.

What type of bars should you choose and where can you buy them?

First, it is crucial to distinguish between crossbars and longitudinal bars.

Longitudinal roof bars

These are the bars that come with your vehicle as standard. Longitudinal roof bars are not necessary for installing a roof tent. However, if you have them, you need to check whether they are decorative or functional (original bars are generally not functional). If they are purely decorative (solid or hollow), they cannot be used to install a roof tent.

In the case of non-decorative longitudinal bars that are sufficiently strong, you can add cross bars with clamps, which attach directly to the longitudinal bars without requiring mounting feet.

Crossbars

This is the essential and necessary component for installing your roof tent. The tent will be attached to these bars. It is therefore essential to choose them carefully.

Depending on your vehicle, these bars can be attached:

  • On the longitudinal bars
  • On the roof anchor points (or rails)
  • In the gutters located on the roof of the vehicle

The choice of these bars must be made according to your vehicle model. To install a roof tent, two cross roof bars are sufficient.

Which roof rack should you choose?

Go Overland tents are compatible with most roof bars, whether they are ultra-thin or very wide (up to 11 cm), round, square, or flat. However, a few criteria must be met to ensure optimal installation. The shape of your bars should be as simple as possible.

Our tent is compatible with all roof bars approved for a load greater than the weight of your tent.
The width required to attach our mounting system to your roof bars, also known as the usable width, must be 70 cm.
The distance between the roof and the top of the roof rack must be greater than 5 cm to allow our fasteners to fit.

The width of the roof rack tube must be less than 11 cm.
The distance between the two roof bars should be approximately 70 cm.

For panoramic or opening roofs, the bar fasteners (transverse or longitudinal) must be placed on the metal bodywork, not on the glass parts, so as not to damage the roof.

Can my poles and roof support the tent and its occupants?

Yes, even on a small vehicle. Your roof bars just need to be able to support the weight of the folded, empty tent.

It is essential to differentiate between the load capacities of the vehicle roof, the roof bars, and the tent itself:

  • The roof: although the bars are not attached directly to the roof, they are attached to the safety arches, which are capable of supporting the weight of the vehicle in the event of a rollover.
  • Roof bars: when in motion, they support the weight of the closed tent.
  • The roof tent: once stationary, the tent supports the weight of the occupants, according to the capacity indicated for each model.

Where can I buy my roof bars?

You can find suitable roof bars by entering your vehicle's reference number on various websites such as Oscaro, Avatacar, Mister-auto, AccessAuto 4×4, France Attelage, or at stores such as Norauto, Feu Vert, and your car dealership.

How do I choose my tent?

When you set off on an adventure in the great outdoors, choosing the right tent is crucial.

At Go Overland, we offer a wide selection of tents suited to different types of travelers and expeditions. Here are a few tips to help you choose the right tent for your needs.

1. Tent capacity

The first criterion to consider is the number of seats.

Our tents are available in different sizes:

  • Compact 2-person tents: Ideal for couples or solo adventurers. These models are generally compact and lightweight, making them easy to transport.
  • Family Tents: Perfect for a family of four or four adults. These tents offer more space and comfort, but are heavier and thicker.

2. Your height

Fold-out tents or clamshell tents, these two designs have different characteristics, making them appealing depending on your size.

If you are under 1.85 m tall, no problem, you will sleep comfortably in any of our tents. If you are over 1.85 m tall, flap tents such as theSummitorJourney may not offer you enough comfort in terms of length.

For greater comfort and space, we recommend our Equinox models or our station wagons.

3. Duration of trips

The length of your trips also influences your choice of tent. All our tents are designed to be suitable for both weekend getaways (especially the two-person tents, which are extremely easy to set up and take down on your car) and longer trips.

4. Included accessories

At Go Overland, it is part of our values to include all necessary accessories at no extra cost:
- Anti-condensation mats
- Removable insulating lining
- LED lighting kit
- Interior storage pockets
- Mounting kit
- Exterior shoe bags
- Crossbars

Conclusion

Choosing the right tent depends on your specific needs: number of people, length of trips, frequency of use, and included accessories. Whether you opt for an entry-level model or a premium tent, Go Overland will help you make the right choice so that every adventure is unforgettable. Feel free to explore our website to discover our entire range and find the tent that suits you best!

Is my car compatible?

At Go Overland Europe, we are committed to offering roof tents suitable for a wide range of vehicles. To ensure safe and optimal installation, it is essential to check certain compatibility criteria between your car and our roof tents.

Load capacity of your vehicle's roof

The dynamic load capacity is the maximum weight your vehicle can carry while in motion. It is important to ensure that the weight of the roof tent, added to that of the roof bars, does not exceed this limit. You can find this information in your vehicle manual or by contacting the manufacturer.

Suitable roof bars

Your vehicle must be equipped with sturdy crossbars capable of supporting the weight of the roof tent. For more information, visit our page on choosing roof bars.

Types of roofs and fixing points

Vehicles can have different types of roofs:

  • Roof with longitudinal rails : Crossbars can be easily attached to it.

  • Roof without rails but with fixing points : Specific bars can be installed directly on these points.

  • Flat roof without fixing points : Jaw systems are used to secure the crossbars.

It is important to check that the fixing points are not in contact with glass surfaces, particularly in the case of panoramic roofs, to avoid damage.

Vehicle height and dimensions

Adding a roof tent increases the overall height of your vehicle. It is therefore essential to take this new dimension into account when driving, particularly when passing under bridges, in parking lots, or in areas with height restrictions.

Driving speed

With a roof tent installed, it is recommended not to exceed a speed of 60 to 75 mph for safety reasons.

Conclusion

Most vehicles, whether city cars, SUVs, vans, or 4x4s, can accommodate a roof tent, provided they meet the criteria mentioned above. If you have any doubts or specific questions about the compatibility of your vehicle with our roof tents, please do not hesitate to contact us. Our team will be happy to assist you so that you can fully enjoy your adventures with Go Overland Europe.
